MY MOVIE RATING SYSTEM
sleepoverjesus

A+/5* Movies I would go out of my way to buy so they can sit proudly on my shelf with the rest of my collection.
A/4.5* Movies that I would copy and keep in my binder of burned movies.
B+/4* Movies I would recommend to friends & family, and would want to be there, in person, as they experience the film..
B/3.5* Movies I would still recommend, but would be okay just asking the person later what they thought.
C+/C//3*/2.5* Movies I would give another day in court if someone I was hanging out with really wanted to watch one, but I’d still point out all the shit I didn’t like about it.
D+/D//2*/1.5* Movies that were pretty much a complete waste of my time, but I can still tell the film-makers at least TRIED, and can even see why someone else might enjoy it, even though it’s not my thing.
F+/F//1*/0.5* Movies that make me mad knowing they exist on the same planet as I do.

THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING: Sweet Home Alabama
sleepoverjesus
So, Dakota Fanning grows up to be Reese Witherspoon….. Innnnteresting……. OMG she’s a PYROKINETIC!!! Awwwwww. He buys her a white harem… Candice Bergin… This bitch. Who is this lesbian coven she has to answer to? OMG they’re all beautiful creatures!!! Does the hound dog represent Cerberus, the guardian dog of hell? Matthew McConaughy looks FANTASTIC! They just insinuated that Reese Witherspoon’s family owned slaves… This film just took a dark turn. Swoozie Kurtz looks TERRIBLE! How many characters does Matthew McConaughy play in this movie??? Selma Blair looks about the same.. “Just because I talk slow, doesn’t mean I’m stupid.” That’s some Gumpian wisdom right there. Oh honey, look out for Juke Boxes… Famous actresses aren’t known to fare well in places like this… Holy crap first slavery, now abortion and homosexuality… This movie is NOT afraid to go there. What did that dog being underwater so long have to do with anything? Is that how she’s going to solve the case of the underwater codger, her mystery dog can stay underwater for minutes at a time and investigate? Why is this movie so political? And by political I mean ABYSMAL??? What is happening? Why is she learning things? When everything went pear shaped? What is she, a time lord? Ohh… She’s a double agent! Ohhhhhhh. His mom’s the MAYOR. Her witch doctor and the high priestess of her coven just arrived!!! Do they need to melt all that gold for a spell? A storm is coming. Oh my god! She’s a more vile antihero than Alex in A Clockwork Orange! I hope they get struck by lightening. This must be the second film in a trilogy… Where our heroes are at their lowest, and the bad guys win in the end? What is the b story with this dog? Leonard Skinner is rolling over in his grave.

RETCON: 2008 MIX: SQUISH!
sleepoverjesus
I've always wished I had put more thought into this mix. There are a ton of songs on here that I just love, and a few I threw on just cause they were what I was listening to at the time... good, fun songs, but just not a FIT for this mix, or my general mix aesthetic. I also paid about the LEAST amount of consideration to play order of any mix... In the end, it really was just a chore to listen to with all the distractingly clumsy song choices and the clunky flow of it all. Anyhoo... For personal reference, here's the changes made.

My Top 10 Favorite Movies (And The Rest)
sleepoverjesus
So on the first day of this year I saw CLOUD ATLAS for the third time and decided it's now my favorite movie. It struck me as funny that, after 33 years of watching and loving movies, my favorite would lie in the most recent. So this got me thinking, just what ARE my favorite films? Could I even compile such a list? Well, apparently I can. I started by going through my DVD collection and pulling forward possible contenders. Then I discovered I was marking every third or fourth film. Of course I love ALL these movies, that's why I own them. So I decided to write out a list, since just the physical mass of a stack of DVDs seemed overwhelming (or as overwhelming as compiling a trivial list of favorite movies can be). I decided to make a few rules to simplify things. First I eliminated films by writers/directors I love that simply can't even be ranked among THEMSELVES let alone compared to others in my collection. Then I eliminated films in a series for pretty much the same reason. Then I just had to think, do I love X movie BETTER than Y... I ended up with a list of about 40. I then sat down, highlighting the ones I KNEW were at the top, and suddenly I found myself with only 8! Then I remembered CLOUD ATLAS which, of course, isn't in my collection yet. So I had 9. Everything else seemed like apples and oranges at that point... but then it hit me, by eliminating films in a series, I had eliminated the one movie that, in my opinion, is the BEST I've ever seen. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. So here we go.

TOP 10 (BY YEAR)
1. The Rocky Horror Picture Show 1975
2. The Neverending Story 1984
3. The Breakfast Club 1985
4. The Color Purple 1985
5. Heathers 1988
6. The Silence Of The Lambs 1991
7. Natural Born Killers 1994
8. Deconstructing Harry 1997
9. Magnolia 1999
10. Cloud Atlas 2012

As for the rest on my “short” list, here they are in no particular order: Pleasantville, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, American Beauty, The Royal Tenenbaums, Clue, Groundhog's Day, The Witches Of Eastwick, She-Devil, Beaches, Back To The Future 1 & 3, Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, After Life, Raise The Red Lantern, Nightbreed, Quills, Series 7, Young Adult, Ed Wood, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, Winter's Bone, Harold And Maude, Gummo, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Clockwork Orange, As Good As It Gets, Return To Oz, The Dark Knight, 200 Cigarettes, Moulin Rouge, Mysterious Skin and Rachel Getting Married

As for the writers/directors whose films I mostly adore: Charlie Kaufman, Todd Solondz, Quentin Tarantino and John Waters

HOW MARILYN REALLY DIED... CIRCA 1992
sleepoverjesus
So, I noticed that today was the anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death... And that put in mind a little short film I was writing back in middle school that I was going to shoot with all my friends called How Marilyn Really Died. Below you will find scans of the original cast page and outline. But yeah... this is a HOT mess. Don't know if any of the "chronology" is correct and I SURE as hell didn't know back then. I'm guessing I forgot to put JFK's assassination in there, since, at the end, he drags Marilyn to hell. I'm also guessing that the whole thing revolves around Marilyn not really dying, but what was found was an "Evil Twin" clone/robot that had been shut down... That's why there was no clear reason for her death. Also... just realizing this... "Pat" is supposed to be Pat Sajak! In my mind I guess it was possible him and JFK grew up together, when, in reality, they were born 30 years apart. There were going to be elaborate sets, including a large "Wheel" room and Heaven and Hell which would be identical with white flowing sheets and toilet paper lit with either a blue or red strobe light, with either "Just Like Heaven" or "Hot! Hot! Hot!" playing in the background so you knew where you were...
I have the first scene written... Mostly Pat Sajak lamenting his inventions... An oven that cooks really fast using radiation, and a record player that plays more "compact" discs and runs on lasers. Quote: "Pretty dumb ideas huh? ... An oven that could blow up a house, heck, a whole neighborhood, and a record player that could burn a hole through your wall." But yeah... JFK makes a deal with the devil, brings Marilyn in on it. Pat makes a deal with with the Witch of the West and can only become a game show host. Somehow Angels get involved, and Satan makes a Marilyn clone robot and the best the Witch of the West can make is a female Frankenstein. (lots of parallelism!!!) Satan is turned into a dog for some reason, and everyone goes to hell.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO - There's no way for me to review this movie than to compare it to the Swedish version. The entire ending of the film is much better in the American version. The clue I had a MAJOR problem with in the Swedish version, which I believe immediately gives the killer away, is more ambiguous in the American one, and I also like the little twist they put in the denoument. The rape is much creepier in the Sweedish version, therefore better because in the Swedish you don't expect it AT ALL. And even though I knew it was coming in the American version, you could still look at the guy playing the character and know he's a pig in some way or another. I was impressed with the Acting in so much as everyone was their character. The girl playing Lisbeth did a very good job, and I almost liked her more than the Swedish version because she had a certain frailty to her that made it all the more impressive when she was in kick ass survivor mode. So I will say I enjoyed the American version, as a whole, much better than the Swedish one, and if I had seen it first, I probably wouldn't have as many problems with the series as I do. I'm looking forward to the sequels.

2011 - BOOK READ, MOVIES SEEN
sleepoverjesus
HAUNTED by Chuck Palahniuk - Shocking for shock's sake, not a lot of entertainment value. Though some of the short stories aren't terrible, every story in the book is something I would have come up with when I was 15. And the frame story is miserable, redundant and completely uninteresting. And epic fail.

THE MUPPETS - Not as good as all the positive reviews led me to believe. For a Muppet Movie, there really weren't a lot of the core Muppets we care about. Miss Piggy was in it for like, what, five seconds? And I can't think of a single Gonzo one-liner. Mini fail.

YOUNG ADULT - I could totally relate to the emptiness in the center of the main character and really enjoyed everything about her. But the story had a strange arc and I felt like I spent too much time wondering where it was going to go, than actually being engaged in the current action.

THE DESCENDANTS - I really enjoyed this movie. Lots of likable characters with a little depth and dynamics. This will probably be one of the contenders for best picture, but that isn't saying too much since this year has been so light on high-caliber movies.

THE THING - What can I say... I barely remember the first one, just that it confused me a lot and I wished that after all the fuss, the alien did a TERRIBLE job at replicating humans. Anyhow, I've since had the movie explained to me, so I don't know if it was that, or if this prequel was clearer, but I wasn't scratching my head so much this time around. I did like the "alien" test our heroine came up with, and I also liked the job the actress did as a whole. I think this movie has gotten pretty bad reviews, but I enjoyed it. The... well... THING with the two faces crawling around the kitchen was terrifying to me and then when I remembered it was in the beginning of... well... THE THING it was even cooler. On a horror level, I'd recommend this movie, and don't understand why the original has such a high rating, and this one so low... Maybe if John Carpenter's had been a film I grew up with I'd feel different, but as an adult, I find them both comparable at around a B / B- rating.

2011 - Book Read, Movie Seen
sleepoverjesus
WATERSHIP DOWN by Richard Adams - So I read this a while ago, but I remember enjoying it. It was one of those books that take me into a "world" that when I'm not reading it, I miss being in. And that's the best thing a book can do in my opinion. There's this magnificent quote at the end about General Woundwort and how he has a moment where he can be the true leader of his people doing what's best for them as he always claims, or he can choose to be a tyrant. Yay! I found it: "At that moment, in the sunset on Watership Down, there was offered to General Woundwort the opportunity to show whether he was really the leader of vision and genius which he believed himself to be, or whether he was no more than a tyrant with the courage and cunning of a pirate." So yeah, the ending of the book as a whole is beautiful and the very very end made me cry. It's a book that even though I got it from the library, I would still love to own.

DRIVE - I can't say I was disappointed by this movie, but from the trailer I was expecting something just non-stop intense. Instead we got what I guess critics have been calling a "European" style pacing, which was very understated, but I think complimented the TRULY intense scenes exquisitely. So I still enjoyed the film, but it was not at all what I was expecting... Let me put it this way... I REALLY wanted to see him hammer the bullet into the guy's head, but when he thinks better of it, it's a more realistic choice, I mean, his hand would probably explode too... so for the film it was the right one... But still... I REALLY WANTED A BULLET HAMMERED INTO SOMEONE'S HEAD!

2011 - Book Read, Movies Seen

SHARP OBJECTS by Gillian Flynn - At first every single character's actions are unrealistic an indecipherable. Almost to the point where you want to just put it down... But the situation at the heart of the story, young girls being murdered and having their teeth pulled out POST MORTEM compels you to continue. And as you do, and more and more is revealed about the characters and their history, everything begins making a dark and disturbing sense. A recommended read.

ANOTHER EARTH (B) - The only thing about this movie, is that there never needed to be "another" Earth. The Sci-Fi element supposedly drives the story, but I feel that without it, you'd still have a story... Sure it would be a standard indie film of quiet desperation and regret... So maybe the ever-approaching earth that hangs in the sky above our own helps to set it apart... But that's about it. The acting is well done, though, and the other Earth is surprisingly well woven into the story, even though, again, it's really just a McGuffin.

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (D) - Silly, silly, silliness. There is no acting in this movie, just reading lines, sometimes with scared faces on. The element you're supposed to be "afraid" of loses all it's terrifying charm once you see it running around in full light half-way through the movie. Don't people learn from Jaws? Less is more, and there was just MORE of what was terrifying the small family in this film. And it was too much.

CONTAGION (A) - The best movie I've seen so far this year. All the casting and acting was excellent. A few of the story-lines were ham-fisted (I'm looking at you Marion Cotillard) and some underwhelming for the dramatic effect I'm sure they intended (clearing my throat; 'Kate Winslet' under my breath) but it was well executed overall and some story-lines that you thought were going nowhere, turned out pleasantly surprising (winking at Jude Law).

So me on my Android app and Paul on his computer decided to see what two cleverbots talking to eachother would talk about. TERRI (B) - I enjoyed this movie, but I felt like it could have been more. There was a lot I could relate to in this movie, from his uncle's depression, to the beautiful girl who liked him because he didn't treat her like a piece of meat or a whore. And the crazy drunk friend whose first reaction is to take his shirt off and try to get blown. So yeah, I wonder if I enjoyed this movie for itself or for what I saw of myself in it... Then again, that might be the most valid way of appreciating art anyhow.

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS II - What can I say, I fucking loved it! Harry potter, yo. Last movie. I feel like they could have taken out the King's Cross scene with Gandalf and, for those who have never read the books, let them think for a while that Harry Potter is dead and it's a surprise for his friends AND the audience (though, of course he survives, he's Harry Fucking Potter!

ATTACK THE BLOCK (C+) - The driving force behind any "attack" movie, be it ghosts, aliens, zombies or military... is you have to care about the characters... I know I had to be lobotomized  to think there was no redemption coming, but when you make your main characters so unlikable, and not even in an interesting way and wait so long to give them any kind of pathos, then, you know, you kind of have me sitting there most of the film regretting I paid 12 bucks to watch a bunch of thugs running around who, in any other movie, would have been killed during the opening encounter with the enemy. And you can say "yeah, but that's what makes it so great, it's NOT like any other movie." And I say "No." And oh yeah, to every hipster douche in the audience... Just because Nick Frost is funny in other movies, doesn't mean every time he's on camera you have to laugh, especially when he's doing things that aren't remotely funny.

CAPTAIN AMERICA - The whole time he's small, I love the movie... The whole time he's kind of a joke as the "Symbol" of Captain America, I really liked it... The time he puts on the final costume and really starts busting baddies, I feel the movie just becomes a mess. A mish-mash of montages, a sudden and disappointingly unmoving death, and Red Skull becoming one with the universe? BOO! But, I also loved the very very, you may have missed it ending. Very well executed.

COWBOYS AND ALIENS (B) - I enjoyed this movie. I think the director really missed out though, trying so hard to make it a "good" movie, instead of focusing on the fun and absurdity a title like COWBOYS AND ALIENS would imply and if explored would have made it a GREAT movie. Also, the person I saw it with HATED the reason the aliens came to earth... But to me, I feel like humans' obsession with such things are as absurd, and so many wars have been fought over something that has no real value except what we have given it.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (C+) - Okay, this review is going to be nothing but ***SPOILERS*** but it's been out so long, I'm sure no one will find it devastating... But let's just start with the first sequence, as James Franco is talking to a board of investors about a medicine which he tested on a chimp called Bright Eyes (homage fail) that VERY chimp they're about to showcase runs amok and, though we find out it was protecting it's young, doesn't stay and PROTECT IT'S YOUNG, no it goes on a rampage ENDING IN THE VERY ROOM WHERE SHE IS BEING DISCUSSED. Now, if at that moment the ape laid dying on the table said "Ladies and Gentlemen, I here's Bright Eyes!" I would have settled in... But no, I knew I was in for an ugly ride. Let's talk Alzheimers and the drug that sets all of this in motion. Frano takes the drug (and the baby chimp) home to try and make his father better. Actually he took the chimp home first, and after 3 years the chimp is doing well, but Lithgow (the father) is a mess... So Franco tries the medicine and lo and behold it works! In fact, like in the chimps it improves Lithgow's mental capacity...
Then another 5 years pass, during which it seems Franco has held an honorary position at the pharmaceutical company since he seems to have no other project but the secret Alzheimer's medicine, and, sadly, the effect of the medicine wears off. At this point, Franco tells his boss about the medicine, but says it's incomplete because it stops working AFTER FIVE YEARS!!!! Do you know how many THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of dollars people would pay to add five QUALITY years of life onto a family member with Alzheimers. But, for some reason the ambitious money hungry boss misses this, but allows Franco to pick up where he left off.
Then John Lithgow dies. Obviously the medicine is a failure if it killed a 70 year old man, right... I mean that's cutting a few years off the actor's age at the beginning of the movie. Remember EIGHT YEARS PASS. So, I dunno, Alzheimers and monkey medicine aside... Maybe he just died because he reached his life expectancy?
Now, okay, I'm not even going to get into Draco Malfoy and why someone who hates chimps would dedicate their life to working with them... And I guess this is explained away by him being the owner's son, but still, Brian Cox didn't seem to care that much for them either.... ANYHOW. At the end, okay, I know the helicoptor is shooting at the apes, and it's now crashed on the edge of the bridge, and there's Bright Eyes, looking at Jacobs, the money hungry drugs maker, seeming to say "So you're the secondary antagonist I've never met. What should I do with you." So he calls over a second smart old ape who DOES know Jacobs and he seems to say "You're that jerk that gave me SUPER INTELLIGENCE!!!" and proceeds to kill him.
All this being said, a Chimp yells NO! and rides a horse. So on THAT level, it works as a fun summer movie and once I decided to let go, I kind of enjoyed it.

THE HELP - Loved this movie. Laughs and tears, and tons of excellent performances. Probably my favorite movie of the year so far.

HORRIBLE BOSSES - Horrible bosses? Horrible movie. Okay, it's not that terrible, but the premise is so flawed. Just fucking quit. And the ending is wrapped up so oddly neat that barely realize it's happening. Charlie Day was great, and almost everything revolving around his character was actually funny... The rest, meh. I mean, come on the "horny" guy is in a store using binoculars to look at a hot ass, when, OH NO! It's really a guy! Such a sad old TV joke, and so much of the rest wasn't much better. The funniest stuff IS in the trailer.

GREEN LANTERN - I liked this movie a lot. I think maybe I wasn't expecting anything, so what I got was a pleasant surprise. There were some redundancies, and a lot of motivations were questionable, but Ryan Reynolds wasn't the douche I expected him to be, I like the way the wrote the love interest, and the guy with the big head did a really good acting job despite... you know, having a ridiculously large head. Also the special effects were amazing for the most part. And I really liked the way, at the end, the thing made of fear rolled through the city like the smoke on September 11, you know, the scariest day in recent American history. So yeah.

THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES - I must just be really forgiving of movies, because I didn't hate this. Again, no expectations, but I wasn't really thrilled by the first two, and I'm not sure if I even saw the third Pirates movie, but, you know, there were 4 or 5 really good scenes, the rest was okay, and I can't think of anything that made my soul escape my body, which really surprised me. Also, I don't understand why Penelope Cruz can't act in English when she's so amazing in the Almodovar movies I've seen her in.

SUPER 8 - Okay SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER - But the monster should have been a Cloverfield. I mean, the thing looks enough like it, and there's the problem... Because this giant ambling beast suddenly knows how to build a space-ship and close garage doors when it leaves? Please... Still, the character work and the movie as the whole was great and very enjoyable. I loved the main kid, and hope to see him in more films. My only other wish is that the group of kids would have worked together more as a whole unit in the end to save the day, like Goonies or something.

THE GIVER by Lois Lowry - I was a little turned off at first by the over simplified "future speak" calling ages by numbers, and just generic stale language. But unlike most bad science fiction, there is a true purpose behind these choices in language in this story, and once the main character begins to bloom, the story opens wide up. Also was surprised by some shockingly disturbing imagery toward the end that I would have never expected at the beginning of the book, which mean both the character and us, the reader were able to travel a full story arc together. The ending's a bummer if you interpret a certain way, which was surprising to me since it is a young reader's book.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (B-): I enjoyed this movie overall, especially on the level of comic-book film. But it WAS a little all over the place in style and even genre. There's a point where the students are under attack for the first time and it feels like a horror movie. I also didn't like the way they felt they needed to wrap up all the things we know about the characters. There's a moment at the end where, knowing what was about to happen, I yelled out OH MY SPINE!!! I wish I hadn't heard so much positive things about it, because I would have expected nothing and been really impressed. Still, trying to be objective, for what it is, a quality movie.

Not Impressed by Supposed Rapture
sleepoverjesus
I'm sorry, but I'm not amused by this Rapture thing. It seems like something I would make up, but no one would care about. So why did this one cult's idea become so wide-spread and mockingly considered the general consensus of people who believe in the Rapture. I dunno. Seems like the hipsters, rather than the believers giving it gravitas, and that makes it a whole lot of nothing.

ICE HAVEN by Daniel Clowes - I enjoyed this collection, though like most of his recent stuff, there just seems to be so much missing that feels more like laziness than a style choice. But (unlike Wilson) I found the characters compelling, and enjoyed, overall, the way the stories mixed together. Still long for the days of Ghost World and the stories from Charicature.

THE BEAVER (B+) - An overall good movie with several weak spots, mostly in chemistry between characters. Jodie and Mel do great jobs, but it feels like they're acting to tennis balls in a green-screen movie. There's a point where I got really confused, and started disliking the "moral" of the film, but then it's all resolved, and I realized I was SUPPOSED to feel disgust. But this all confused me emotionally, despite the pay-off. I'm sure, knowing where it's going now, I'd enjoy it much more on a second viewing.

BRIDESMAIDS (A) - A really fun movie with great acting, character development and humor. A near perfect comedy.
